NIRS announced that the construction of 'NIRS Daegu Center' had begun at the groundbreaking ceremony. NIRS Daegu Center is to support improved efficiency and security of information resource management practices as well as the enhanced usability of information.

The total project cost of the center is KRW 433.6 billion. An administrative building, a computing building, and a visitor center are scheduled to be built on a site of 81,367m2 in Dong-gu, Daegu City. Total building area would be 35,396m2 and is expected to be completed in August 2021.

The 3rd center construction project was reflected in the 5th National Informatization Master Plan in 2013, and the NIRS Daegu Construction Master Plan was confirmed in 2016.

There were many difficulties in selecting a construction company due to the burden of high-level construction of the data center and the bidding process, however, in August 2019, Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd. was finally selected and construction could begin.

The Daegu Center represents security, stability, and eco-friendliness as a 'best-in-class' national security facility, such as securing seismic performance that can withstand a seismic intensity of 7.0, applying a Tier IV* level facility plan for uninterrupted operation, and maximizing energy efficiency using topography.

* Tier IV : Criteria that regulates the performance of data center and the establishment of a computing infrastructure environment capable of non-stop maintenance

Ms. Kim, the President of NIRS affirmed, "We will make sure to complete a cloud data center without problems by 2021, the construction courses have been quite challenging though due to difficulties in the bidding processes since 2013. In order for us to do that, we will closely cooperate with related organizations such as Daegu City, the Public Procurement Service, and construction companies."

She added that she would make best efforts to contribute to creating domestic information technology (IT) market and vitalizing the industry by increasing the utilization of information resources through efficiently managing the government's information resource infrastructure, which is changing to AI, Big Data, and cloud.
