Hi, I'm Seung-eun, an assistant deputy director of NIRS Gwangju.
Do you happen to know what day today is?
Today is June 24th ????? What day is it?
June 24th is the ‘Digital Government Day.’
It is a day to commemorate the excellence of Korean Digital Government with the public. Korean Government was awarded one of the first place prizes among 193 countries in the UN e-government survey in 2020.
NIRS has operated over 45,000 information resources of 45 government institutions as an exclusive government data center since 2005.
About 5,000 visitors from about 160 countries around the world had paid visits to NIRS to study about distinguished Korean digital government for the past 10 years right before COVID-19 started to be prevalent.
We used to invite the people who were interested in us and our services to the site every year, regretfully, however, we have had no option but to provide an online tour since last year due to the pandemic.
This is the second LAN tour introducing the second center of NIRS, the NIRS Gwangju followed by last year. Let’s begin!
This is a reception office. NIRS commands a quite strict identity check when greeting visitors as one of the government institutions where require a top level of security.
Please note that electronic devices such as USB, portable batteries, laptops, voice recorders, and cameras are prohibited items to be carried in.
Then, shall we pick up a visitor’s pass?
Now we have a pass, let us move in.
I am Hwang, Kyu-cheol, the head of NIRS Gwangju
I thank you all for visiting us through the LAN tour. We are operating and managing a number of major information systems of government agencies and thriving to be the leader in the ICT field of the public sector. I hope we could meet at the actual site when the Covid-19 pandemic gets calm. Once again, thank you for joining the LAN tour.
Now, we are moving to the Security Operation Center, shall we?
Hi, would you introduce yourself, please?
Hi, glad to meet you. I’m Ju-yeol, a chief commanding officer of SOC.
Could you briefly tell us about this room?
Sure, SOC plays a role as the eyes of NIRS Gwangju. All the system operation statues are being monitored in real-time.
There are over 10,000 hardware to care in NIRS Gwangju. This is a dashboard to show operation and management status. It is next to impossible to manage whole systems manually indeed. That’s why we have introduced Big Data technologies in the monitoring scheme.
In SOC, we manage system incidents and cyber threats. This room is operated 24/7 and hasn’t turned its lights off since 2007 when it first started its services.
Wow! it is amazing to know that you have been working days and nights for us!
Shall we count in 3 together to cheer you up? One, two, three, go!
Wow ! There are whole lots of devices over here! Let’s find out more about this room!
Could you introduce yourself, please?
Hi, I’m Minho from the General Operation Management Dept. of NIRS Gwangju.
There is so many devices here, where are we?
This is the second floor of the building. As one of the first exclusive data center facilities in the public sector, the computer rooms of this building are optimized for information system operation.
Size-wise, it is like almost a half of a football field. We have 4 more of this.
There are crucial systems for 7 public order-related institutions such as the Prosecution Service, National Police Agency, and Ministry of Justice in this room. We have some secrets to keep these critical national assets safe. Let me share with you some of them.
First of all, there is an earthquake-proof constructive framework.
Secondly, we have eco-friendly Inergen Gas for fire fighting practice.
Thirdly...well, I’ll tell you more in your next visit after the virus would be gone as they are confidences!
I see. well, we have been all inside, how about we moving out to get some air?
Wow, I’m at the Park Sky, a beautiful resting place for the associates.
Garden Sky is one of the hot places in NIRS Gwangju. People drink coffee and take a rest here. There is a small store nearby as well.
Now, we are almost done with the tour. Come, I would like to invite a special fellow of mine, shall we?
Hi, please introduce yourself!
Hi, I’m Tae-joon working for National Tax System Operation Team. We are controlling over 2,000 information systems here.
We support most of the major tax-related public services such as year-end-tax-settlement, VAT reporting, and general income tax payment to be provided to the people smoothly. On top of that, we do a number of prevention activities over contingencies such as system failures or cyber infringements.
Wow, we could conveniently work on year-end-tax-settlement practice without any problem all thanks to you. Thank you so much!
Garden Sky is lovely! Is there anywhere else I can have a look?
There is a pond in front of the building. You can find some fish and take some photos there.
Is that so? Let’s check there out then!
So far, I’m Seung-eun from NIRS Gwangju, see you next year! Thank you everyone!
